time I went to Japan I visited Diskshop Misery in Hiroshima. The store is run by a delightful person named Guy. When I walked into the store he instantly noticed my Discharge shirt yelling out ‘Oh! Nice shirt!’ and waved me over. Guy invited some Hiroshima punks as well as a Swedish punk to come hang out, we all had dinner and drinks, was a good time. I got to meet the artist Sugi (check out his album artworks, the dude is fucken good) which was super cool, we bonded over both being otaku. Guy asked me if he could use the Monolith artwork for his band ‘Origin of M’. Guy had actually invited me to come to a band rehearsal with Origin of M, but I ended up going to karaoke with some people at my hostel and ended up black out drunk. I was quite shocked when I woke up in my hostel room. No clue how I got back. Also when he took me out to dinner I forgot to leave money for the food and beers (sorry Guy!) so I figure letting him use my artwork was the least I could do. If you’re a punk visiting Japan, be sure to find Diskshop Misery! End of side story. A few influences went into the idea behind this. The first being the songs ‘Sphinx’, ‘Yog-Sothoth’ and ‘Slaves of the Crucifix’ by the band ‘Poison’ – the German thrash band, not the cock rock American band. Poison are fucken badass, doing 7-9minute thrash songs I can imagine is quite a challenge, let alone doing in such an evil manner as Poison, the vocals and guitar are so frightening mixed with the pure assault of the drums makes for some good listening. Poison really do the band name justice, they make music that is as evil and tough as the name implies. I also dig classic Mesoamerican architecture, so I chucked a bit of that in there. ‘At the Mountains of Madness’ by HP Lovecraft was probably the biggest influence. Fucken great story. The movie ‘The Thing’ (1985) is one of my favourite movies and if you enjoy that movie you should definitely give ‘At the Mountains of Madness’ a read. I had a lot of people telling me at the time that maybe I should draw more things other than frogs. Being stubborn, my mentality for the drawing ‘fuck them I’m gonna show those guys how cool a frog can look’. So this is a drawing of a frog with its mouth open that serves at the entrance to the Monolith. I tried keeping the shapes of the structure to look man-made while adhering to a frog shape, this ordinarily would be quite fun, but mixing perspective into the picture made it more of a restrictive challenge. Not in a bad way though, it made me have to think more. This drawing started out as my attempt to learn perspective. If I’m doing something purely for the sake of learning it, I can never seem to put the same focus as I can if I legitimately care for the drawing. I always get stuck in mentality that it’s a scrappy sketch that doesn’t matter which results in my mind no applying itself. My knowledge of perspective was very limited (still is). I knew that I had to make a bunch of points and draw lines from those points, but because I only had a rough idea of what the drawing was meant to look like I ended up drawing a massive grid from 3 points and figured the drawing out from there. A very tedious and time consuming way to do the pencil skeleton of the drawing, the grid was impressive to look at least, shame it all had to be erased after the inking was finished. Once the left hand side was fully sketched out I went over it with 2x A3 pieces of tracing paper then using carbon paper to transfer it onto the right side. Doing symmetrical drawings is one of the most boring tedious ways to draw for me. If a drawing requires me to do something regardless of how tedious, I have to do it. The drawing took about 2 months to complete which I attribute both to my timid nature with inking at the time and also that I was using a 10/0 Mini Liner brush for the whole thing. If you visit an art store in the near future check one out and imagine using that on a 760x570mm drawing. This is the later. If I can’t come up with an idea for a drawing, I’ll lay on my bed listening to music. For prevention against getting stuck scrolling through Facebook and Instagram, I’ll put my phone out of arms reach. Then think. At first the thoughts are all over the place, it’s always important just to let those thoughts play out for a while. Eventually after clearing out the scattered junk the brain starts to focus and ideas pop up out of nowhere. If I’m constantly looking at shit on the internet or other people’s artwork I don’t get ideas for drawings. I find if I purposely bore my mind it comes up with ideas, gotta shut off the visual\mental noise and chuck on some audio noise. Not that music is boring, but it has the effect of both having attention and not at the same time, it’s easy to be accustomed to. I can’t remember where this thought started exactly, but it was along the lines of me thinking about how I keep drawing the same style/kind of bird over and over. My past birds not exactly alike, but similar enough. Then I thought it would be interesting\fun to work around a giant hole in a bird’s neck. This led to the bird needing a long neck so I could properly play with the idea. I had already drawn a swan and wanted something new. A long beaked bird was something I hadn’t done before so off to Google images I went to find some cool looking birds. Found a bird that looked good to play with (in regards to how I draw), did a sketch digitally, drew a new sketch on paper. I draw digitally to either quickly learn how to draw something or do a drawing that I don’t have the time to invest on paper. I always prefer working on paper. I have move focus when working non-digitally and well… it just feels better for some reason. That isn’t me being dismissive of digital drawing, I have a massive amount of respect for those who produce digital works I could never even hope to match technically. I copy the paper drawing onto some fancy art paper, in this case Arches Watercolour paper. Then proceed to ink\Bob Ross the drawing. Happy accidents for days. Or well hours. This drawing was in done in a night which is rare for me. An A3 drawing will take me about 2-3 days to finish, I was quite stunned to finish this in one night. After completion starts reflection on all the things I fucked up, then get bummed that the drawing didn’t turn out that great, then go to bed. When I wake up I realise the drawing maybe isn’t as bad as I originally thought. Kriegshog fucken rule. Highly recommend listening to their LP. It sucks that they weren’t around long enough to produce some more records. However, their quick appearance and disappearance suits the frantic style of noise they produce. I hadn’t listened to them until I got back from my second trip to Japan. My best mate asked me to grab him a copy of the LP because it’ll be heaps cheaper there than on the internet. Found it, bought it, gave it to friend, friend lent it to me, I listened, I feel in love, I was mildly angry at myself that I had bought the record for friend and not for myself. I wanted to create the human races monument of remorse over the death of nearly all animals of the world, deaths that were the result of humans’ reckless consumption. Humans pump oil into the mouth of an animal skull as an apology and offering to bring the dead animals back. The oil flows from the cities up the pipes into the skull, due to the desperation of humans there is too much oil being pumped for the structure to take, the excess is flowing into the surrounding environment. The structure on the right is where the humans view and voice their pleas, it also represents how with our own hands we’ve cut off the life of the Sun, drilled into earth to burn it, leaving poison waste that’s ejected into where the animals lived, away from human homes. I tried my hardest to create a visual language that I hadn’t seen before (by ripping off heaps of stuff I have seen before). I wanted it to kind of be like a sculpture relief that tells a story, serving as kind of a record. So it’s an imagined description\representation of the actual structure rather than the structure itself, if that makes sense. I don’t know if this worked out well or not, I can’t tell if it’s awesome or a pile of jumbled shit due to looking at it for so long. Hopefully you lovely people can see some of the story in there, if not then I hope at least it’s fun to look at. Finally finished this after nearly 3 years of on and off work. If you look far enough back in my Instagram you’ll see a few initial practice sketches for this piece. Lots of other drawings got in the way, as well as getting drunk in other countries, as well as general life shit. How I draw changed so much from when it started until now, I literally forgot how to draw it as originally intended. In hindsight the whole thing was a bit of a train wreck, still fun to do though. I tried my hardest to figure out how each element would look. I would draw in my sketch book certain elements over and over again until I discovered something I was happy with. This is counter to my usual process of winging everything and hoping for the best. After the drawing being dragged out for such a long period of time I had to give up this process due to a loss of interest in the drawing – I was tired of thinking about it and wanted it over. I doubt this would have happened had I dedicated myself to it when I first started but unfortunately life got in the way. There are mistakes that loom over the drawing, I don’t wish for the drawing to have worked out differently though. Every drawing is what it is. Same for life maybe. Every drawing is a way to learn how to do something new for a future artwork, just as every action we take in life is a way to inform ourselves on how to interact with reality in the future. Or I could be thinking into all this too much. The title of the drawing comes from the Stromcrow song ‘Unwilling To Forgive’.
